Reasons to Choose Pine Dressers

Whether moving to a new location, or just updating a current residence, people are always looking for refreshing furniture choices. When it comes to quality and personality, wooden furniture is always the best selection. But what kind of wood is best for your home? If you want a bright and affordable option, pine furniture is the simple choice.

Pine Dressers in the Bedroom

The perfect way to lighten up any bedroom would be to select one or two pine dressers. This kind of wood makes the dressers appealing to the eye, and is much sturdier then particleboard or veneers. To ensure that your dressers will last, it is worth investing in something that will accumulate value over time.

Problems with Particle Board and Cheaper Wood

While particle board is less expensive than solid wood, there are many disadvantages to this type of furniture. Because it is made up of wood chips and shavings, particle board is unattractive, cheap, and prone to expansion and discoloration due to moisture exposure. To make particle board look more like solid wood, and provide some protection against moisture, you can attach thin veneers to the exterior. However, even with this added protection, particle board remains an imitation that many will find unappealing.

Of course, to save money, you can also choose from a wide selection of other cheaper woods. But while the look of pine can be replicated on these woods through stains or paint, again, the longevity and quality will be of lesser value.

Safety Concerns with Particle Board

If buyers still decide to choose particle board to save money, they should be very aware of some of the serious safety hazards that they may bring into their homes. While the particle board itself isn’t dangerous, the mixture of certain adhesives used to manufacture the particle board can be very toxic. The true danger with particle board comes from formaldehyde, which while colorless, has a strong odor that can trigger asthma attacks. While only those with sensitive respiratory functions will suffer direct harm, exposure to formaldehyde can also give your pets cancer over time. To cut down the chances of exposure, you could use two coats of laminate or varnish to seal the wood, but even this is not guaranteed to completely safeguard your home against formaldehyde. With this in mind, even though particle board is cheap, the possible cost to your health is a far greater investment that most people cannot afford to risk.

Is Oak Furniture the Best Option?

While pine and oak furniture are currently the two most competitive woods in the market, both woods actually don’t have very much in common. Due to its color, and ability to be cut into many different eye-catching designs, pine tends to be used for more rustic and traditional furniture. On the other hand, oak is used for a wider variety of styles, and unlike the soft wood of its competition, oak furniture is made of sturdier hard wood. While oak is heavy and has better resistance against wear and tear, pine is lighter and can absorb a high degree of shock. Depending on what style you’re looking for, both pine and oak are reliable furniture choices over particle board.

Why Pine May Be Preferable

Above almost everything else, one of the most attractive qualities of this wood is that it is far less expensive than oak. For instance, while both pine dressers and oak dressers look great, you would spend much more money on the same size oak option. Another reason to choose this wood would be if you are furnishing a child’s bedroom. Because that child will eventually grow up, you can invest in furniture that is less expensive, with the idea of replacing it in a few years. Also, pine is the best kind of wood for painting, as the wood is very agreeable to stains and paint.
